Comedy Review: Des Bishop

The Irish in New York were laughing up a storm last weekend and it wasn't just from watching the Ryder Cup. Comedian Des Bishop was in town for a pair of sold-out gigs.

Des Bishop was born in New York and moved to Ireland at the age of 14. He is, quite literally, an Irish-American. Last weekend, Bishop performed for charity in aid of the Aisling Irish Community Center in conjunction with The Irish Lobby For Immigration Reform.

Bishop's stand-up show is a brilliantly crafted insight into his dual life as a 'yank' in Ireland and a 'mick' in New York. Like all great comedians, he is extremely candid about his personal struggles - with alcoholism and cancer - and turns painful episodes from his life into comedic gold. The irony of being banished to Ireland for drinking too much or the embarrassment of having "morning glory" during a medical examination are both inspired bits. Bishop's show is unique in the way he can capture Irish behavior perfectly and then look at it from an American perspective (and vice versa). His material is borne from experience and is, therefore, authentic and honest.

Bishop strikes just the right balance between self-deprecation and confidence in his performance. He never takes a cheap shot but he is also absolutely unafraid to mock hypocrisy and criticize stupidity (both Irish and American). The Irish attitude towards drinking and immigration are both fair targets for Bishop – apt subjects in light of the beneficiaries of the charity. Bishop made the predominantly Irish and/or Irish-American crowd laugh at themselves while also seriously challenging some deep-rooted bigotry and double-standards within that same community.

Bishop is a smart and fearless comedian. And most importantly, he is also hilarious!

Karl Spain (from Ireland), himself worth seeing as a headliner, opened both shows with great performances.

Model Challenge USA Winner: Alisha Jones

The time is coming near for the second installment of Jenna Morasca's Model Challenge USA. As Jenna and crew gear up for round 2, we take a look back at last year's winner and some of the finalists.

Alisha Jones, whoe grew up on a working farm in the small town of Maynard Arkansas ( population 371) won last years crown. Jones credits her family and friends for giving her lots of support that, along with her hard work and preparation, put her over the top to win the competition.

Alisha says this competition did so many things for her modeling career and wants to thank Jenna for creating such a wonderful event and Cheryl Clark for being such a great director. Since the competition Alisha Has moved to Scottsdale Arizona and done tradeshows like CES 2006 where she was featured in Maxim Online, Bikini.com, and the Barret Jackson Fashion show. She's also been a model for muscle cars in Arizona which was featured on Spike TV. With this win under her belt, we look for Alisha's pretty face to be popping up all over the place as her career is now off and running.

A "Husband Store" has just opened in New York City that sells husbands.

When women go to choose a husband, they have to follow the instructions at the entrance:
